Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia Liu Jin Attends UN Chinese Language Day Event and Awards the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship

On April 20, Ambassador Liu Jin attended the United Nations Chinese Language Day event held at the University of The Gambia and awarded scholarship to outstanding UTG students. The gathering was attended by UTG Vice Chancellor Professor Herbert Robinson, Chinese Dean of Confucius Institute at UTG Mme. Xie Mingying, Gambian students who studied in China and students from UTG and two senior secondary schools.

H.E. Ambassador Liu Jin noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of Chinese being designated official language of the United Nations, and the UN Chinese Language Day commemoration will be a highlight of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. He reviewed the fruitful cooperation between China and The Gambia over the decade since the restoration of diplomatic relations, and encouraged Gambian students to strive for excellence and inject more vitality into China-Gambia friendship. 

Vice Chancellor Professor Herbert Robinson thanked China for its continuous support in the educational sector of The Gambia. He stated that the university would fully support Chinese language education in The Gambia, deepen educational cooperation between the two countries, and contribute to closer people-to-people bonds between China and The Gambia.

The Confucius Institute at UTG and the Chinese Medical Team in The Gambia showcased Chinese calligraphy, tea art, paper-cutting and traditional Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment before the award of scholarship. Gambian teachers and students actively participated, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges.
