Hickenlooper, Senate Colleagues Stand With Science, Reaffirm Mifepristone Safety

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, along with the entire Senate Democratic caucus, recently introduced a resolution affirming that the abortion medication mifepristone is safe and effective. The senators' argued that policies impacting access to the medication must be equitable, transparent, and based on peer-reviewed, evidence-based science.

"Mifepristone is safe, FDA-approved, and should stay that way permanently," said Hickenlooper. "Women shouldn't have to keep wondering if their rights will hold up. This is their decision to make, not the government's."

At the beginning of May, a federal appeals court ruled in Louisiana v. FDA that mifepristone prescriptions can't be sent through the mail, overruling regulations previously set by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and threatening millions of women's access to abortion medication.

The senators' resolution came hours before a temporary administrative stay by the Supreme Court was set to expire. Shortly after, the Supreme Court ruled in support of maintaining access to mifepristone while the lawsuit continues.

The senators first introduced the resolution in 2023, following the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade, which sparked attacks on reproductive rights across the country. Since then, 20 states have banned or restricted access to abortion care.

Hickenlooper recognizes that access to reproductive healthcare is essential. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Hickenlooper introduced the Women's Health Protection Act to guarantee access to abortion nationwide, but Republicans blocked its passage.

He previously introduced the Right to Contraception Act, which would codify and strengthen the legal right to contraceptives. He also cosponsored the Right to IVF Act, which would establish a national right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) services, as well as the Expanding Access to Family Planning Act to protect and expand access to reproductive health care - including birth control and cancer screenings.
