The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on May 29, 2026, released its "2025 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR), Part 1," presenting results of the agency's annual "Point-in-Time-Count," which estimates sheltered and unsheltered homelessness across the country.

According to the report, approximately 745,652 people were experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2025. While the report showed the first reduction in overall homelessness since 2016 (3.4%), the data indicates that chronic homelessness continued to rise in 2025 to the highest figure on record. Adults aged 55 and over make up nearly 20% of all people experiencing homelessness.

LeadingAge continues our advocacy to prevent and end homelessness among older adults, and we urge Congress to scale federal rental assistance programs and investments in homelessness interventions to address the housing crisis.
