April is Alcohol Awareness Month; substance abuse services available through EAP and medical plan

Employees and members of their immediate household have access to six free counseling sessions through LifeMatters, the university's Employee Assistance Program. These sessions can address a variety of issues, including alcohol and other substance abuse. For those enrolled in a Marquette medical insurance plan, the plan includes coverage for mental health and substance abuse services.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, which aims to highlight the importance of understanding how alcohol affects health and explore options for drinking less or not at all.

Alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States. While reducing alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and long-term memory problems, it can also have health benefits that include lower blood pressure, better sleep, increased energy and reduced feelings of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, it can have positive social and professional outcomes such as improved judgment, healthier relationships with friends and family, and increased productivity.

Some tips to change drinking habits include:

  • Bring awareness of current habits by tracking alcohol consumption (trackers like the CDC's Check your Drinking tool can be especially helpful)
  • Be mindful of temptations, such as people, places, activities and emotions and make a plan to stay ahead of them
  • Choose non-alcoholic beverages instead of their alcoholic counterparts
  • If choosing to consume alcohol, make simple adjustments like drinking slowly, choosing beverages with lower alcohol content and alternating alcoholic drinks with water

The EAP can provide support for employees and members of their household wanting to reduce their alcohol use, as well as support for a variety of other issues. Individuals can speak to a master's-level counselor in-person or over the phone, and this is free for up to six sessions.

Employees and their family members enrolled in a Marquette medical insurance plan may also obtain behavioral health care that is covered in the same manner that other primary care is. More information on coverage can be found in the mental health benefits summary and the 2026 Total Rewards Guide. Instructions on how to search for behavioral health providers can be found here.

Detailed information of these and many more resources related to employee benefits and wellness can be found on the Benefits and Wellness page.
