US-101 to Temporarily Close in Both Directions for Semiquincentennial Fourth of July Fireworks Display on the Golden Gate Bridge

Published: Jun 29, 2026

Schedule: Lane, ramp closures on Saturday, July 4 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

San Francisco County and Marin County - The city of San Francisco, with the coordination with other Bay Area agencies, will host the Fourth of July Semiquincentennial celebration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As part of the celebration, a special fireworks show will be launched from the east side of the Golden Gate Bridge between the towers. Visit sf.gov/july4 for event details.

To ensure the safety of the traveling public, Caltrans will be closing lanes on US-101 in both directions starting at 8 p.m. Crews will be closing the Northbound US-101 off-ramp at Lincoln Boulevard in San Francisco, the Southbound US-101 off-ramp at Spencer Avenue in Marin County, the Northbound US-101 on- and off-ramps at Girard Street in San Francisco, the Northbound US-101/State Route 1 (SR-1) interchange off-ramp, and the SR-1 off-ramp at Lake Street.

Caltrans is working closely with California Highway Patrol (CHP) to help ensure the safety of motorists using San Francisco roads and freeways to attend the event. The fireworks display is scheduled from 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Lanes will begin closing at 8 p.m., and the Golden Gate Bridge is scheduled to be closed between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. The bridge will close to all traffic (including vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles). Drivers traveling between San Francisco and Marin counties during this time will need to use detours to reach their destinations. See detour maps below.

Caltrans will deploy Changeable Message Signs (CMS) for area freeways to alert drivers to closures and expected delays. Significant congestion is anticipated on US-101, SR-1, and The Presidio Parkway well before the fireworks begin.

Caltrans strongly encourages visitors to consider using public transportation to avoid delays. Transit agencies will provide enhanced service in the evening, and traffic approaching the Golden Gate Bridge is expected to be heavy beginning in the late afternoon.
