PADANG - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of West Sumatra facilitated a meeting between APINDO Chair Shinta Widjaja Kamdani and beneficiaries of the rumah tumbuh (incremental housing) program on Thursday (April 23, 2026).
Held at the PMI West Sumatra Office in Padang, the meeting formed part of an evaluation and collaboration effort between PMI and the business sector to support recovery for communities affected by flash floods and landslides in Agam Regency.
During the session, beneficiaries were given the opportunity to directly convey the condition of the housing units that have been built, as well as the outstanding needs. The dialogue was conducted openly among residents, PMI, and APINDO representatives.
PMI West Sumatra field coordinator Ahmad Jais said progress on the rumah tumbuh construction has been significant.
"Out of the planned 15 units, 10 are nearly completed. We are continuing to push for acceleration so all units can be occupied soon," he stated.
However, he noted that basic facilities remain lacking in the current housing units.
"These houses measure 4 by 6 meters with two bedrooms, but they are not yet equipped with sanitation facilities (MCK) and kitchens. These are urgent needs, as residents are still relying on shared public facilities," he explained.
Malalak Subdistrict Head Ulya Satar expressed appreciation for the roles of PMI and APINDO in assisting disaster-affected communities.
"We are grateful to APINDO and PMI, especially the field coordinators who continue to actively oversee the construction. This has been very helpful for our community," he said.
Meanwhile, APINDO Chair Shinta Widjaja Kamdani reaffirmed the business sector's commitment to supporting the completion of the housing program.
"We will continue to coordinate with PMI West Sumatra until all rumah tumbuh construction is completed," she emphasized.
Chair of PMI West Sumatra, Aristo Munandar, also underscored the organization's commitment to bridging community needs with partner support.
"PMI ensures that assistance is delivered accurately and in line with actual needs. This collaboration is crucial to ensure recovery proceeds faster and with dignity," he said.
The meeting is expected to encourage further support from the business sector to complete essential housing facilities, ensuring that affected residents not only have shelter but also livable homes that meet basic needs.
