Myanmar: Statement by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on the fifth anniversary of the coup 15:00 The High Representative issued a statement on behalf of[...]

Five years on from the military coup, condemned by the European Union, that followed the last free and fair elections, Myanmar continues to face relentless conflict, which is inflicting continuous suffering on millions of people. The people of Myanmar need an immediate end to the violence, respect for human rights, a commitment to an inclusive political process and unhindered access to humanitarian assistance.

The European Union has closely followed the electoral process in December 2025 and January 2026. The prevailing context and the implementation of the process made clear that the essential elements of free and fair elections were not met, namely a credible transparent and inclusive process, in line with international standards.

We condemn the continuing grave human rights violations, which persist alongside widespread restrictions on fundamental freedoms and a climate of fear. We call on the end of all forms of violence and the release of all prisoners arbitrarily detained, including those arrested under the Election Protection Law.

The humanitarian situation remains dire, with over 16 million people in urgent need of assistance. In addition to the internal displacement of over 3.6 million people, tens of thousands of Myanmar citizens have fled to neighbouring countries in search of safety.

The European Union will continue to provide development and humanitarian support to the people of Myanmar. As the largest donor responding to the crisis, the European Union and its Member States remain committed to finding effective ways to deliver much needed assistance to those affected.

The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus sets out key criteria for putting Myanmar back on the path toward stability. The European Union continues to support it.

The European Union stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their aspiration to democracy and peace.
