In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month this November, Placer County Public Health is celebrating the vital role of caregivers by launching a new caregiver survey and hosting a free Virtual Dementia Tour on Nov. 13.
The caregiver survey - open through January 2026 - invites residents who provide care or support to a family member, friend or loved one to share their experiences and challenges. The confidential survey focuses on understanding the needs of caregivers, particularly regarding respite care, to help shape future programs and resources.
"Family caregivers make an incredible difference every day," said Megan Sponholz, who leads the county's Healthy Aging program. "By sharing their experiences through this survey, caregivers can help us better understand what support makes the most impact, and how we can strengthen services across Placer County."
Caregivers and community members are also encouraged to join a free Virtual Dementia Tour on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The immersive session simulates the challenges of dementia using sensory tools to build empathy and understanding in caregivers and healthcare professionals. Sign up for a slot here.
Finally, Placer County's In-Home Supportive Services program is continually in need of paid caregivers. Are you already caring for someone and have some extra hours to fill? There is likely a recipient close by that could use your help. Apply to join our caregiver registry at placer.ca.gov/pa-apply. The county offers many resources for caregivers including classes.
Whether they're caring for a loved one or supporting others professionally, caregivers play a vital role in keeping our community strong and connected. By sharing their experiences, seeking out training, or joining the local caregiver network, residents can help shape a more compassionate future for aging in Placer County.
