The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) has confirmed mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus (WNV) in the City of Fullerton. The surveillance traps were set in an area near the cross streets of W. Commonwealth Ave. and Highland Ave.

The West Nile Virus can cause serious symptoms for humans, though in most cases is more mild and flu-like. It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which acquire the virus when feeding on infected birds.

At this time, OCMVCD asks to please take precautions and wear mosquito repellent when mosquitoes are most active (dawn or dusk). Additionally, regularly drain containers filled with water, clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls and dump water from potted plant saucers.
