The University of Michigan-Flint School of Management is hosting five events in five weeks, fostering new connections and opportunities for students, alums and employers.
The event series will begin with a Virtual Alumni Career Panel from noon to 1 p.m, Sept. 24. This moderated discussion will introduce students to alums currently in the workforce, including:
Panelists will discuss their careers in business and share tips for success. Visit go.umflint.edu/pt61n to participate via Zoom.
The series will transition from virtual to in-person gatherings with Networking 101, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Oct. 1, at 1 Riverfront Plaza. This free workshop will help attendees learn how to create, build and nurture business relationships. Presenters will include Brianna Mosier, executive director of Flint & Genesee Education & Talent, and Andrew Younger (1999, BA in Environmental Policy), executive director of the Flint & Genesee Chamber. Topics will include introducing yourself, body language, a practice session, social networking and more. Registration is required.
"Our goal with this workshop is to help minimize the intimidation of meeting new people," said Younger. "Instead of coming into a situation with fear of the unknown, we want to help attendees approach networking with excitement for the possibilities of what's to come from these new relationships."
The Business Summit II will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct. 13, at the Northbank Center. This event will feature guest speaker Garrick Rochow, president and CEO of Consumers Energy and its Fortune 500 parent company, CMS Energy. Rochow will discuss the corporation's commitment to its customers, society and the environment. Admission is $20, payable during the required online registration process. Lunch will be provided.
An Alumni Social will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 22, at the Fenton Winery & Brewery. This free casual event offers alums, students and faculty the opportunity to connect and explore their shared interests. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Advanced registration is required.
"Networking shouldn't start when you start your career," said Mosier. "You should be networking with your classmates and peers, your professors or other professionals you meet. They all can open doors to mentorship, internships or future career opportunities."
The series will conclude with an opportunity for students and alums to use the networking skills they have previously learned and practiced. SOM's Career Fair, from 2:30 to 6 p.m., Oct. 29, at 1 Riverfront Plaza will feature more than 40 employers seeking candidates for full-time, part-time and internship roles. Attendees are asked to wear business attire and bring 10 or more printed résumés. Students may register on the university's Handshake employment platform. Alums are also welcome.
"The School of Management is unique because it helps students develop into career-ready business professionals," said Yener Kandogan, interim dean and professor of international business. "Part of this development is helping students hone their networking skills. This event series does that and, as a result, students will gain the confidence needed to succeed at our Career Fair and beyond."
Business majors can earn five Career Development Requirement points for participating in the Virtual Alumni Career Panel, Networking 101 and Business Summit. They can also earn 10 CDR points for engaging with employers at the Career Fair.
