Ranking Member Shaheen, Senator Murkowski Condemn Violence Against Women and Girls by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) released the following statement on the attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher Maternity Hospital in North Darfur, Sudan, where, according to reports, at least 460 patients and their families were killed:

"We strongly condemn the horrific October 29 attack on El Fasher Maternity Hospital in North Darfur that killed at least 460 patients and their families. We further condemn the ethnic targeting of civilians and the kidnapping of medical staff for ransom by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The deliberate targeting of civilians, including humanitarian, medical and aid workers, is an abhorrent war crime and must stop. Despite a reported ceasefire agreement, the RSF's campaign of violence continues to spread across Sudan, with new attacks reported in multiple cities.

"Throughout this conflict, women and girls in Sudan have endured unspeakable suffering. They have been subjected to brutal rape and sexual violence, seen loved ones torn from their families, rounded up and killed, deprived of food and water and endured repeated displacement. The massacre at El Fasher Maternity Hospital was a calculated attack on civilians, part of a broader campaign of violence that targets women and girls. This brutality will continue until those arming and financing the RSF are held to account.

"RSF fighters continue to act with total impunity, even broadcasting their crimes online. We call on the RSF's benefactors to immediately cease their support and stop fueling these atrocities. We also urge renewed U.S. leadership to end the violence and deliver lifesaving humanitarian relief for those in desperate need."
