Norwalk Celebrates Supportive Housing for Veterans

The City of Norwalk recently held a grand opening ceremony for their newest affordable housing development for veterans. Veterans Villas at San Antonio Drive is a four-story apartment complex for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness and low-income families with a military head of household.

Veterans Villas at San Antonio Drive includes 60 homes, 40 of which are supportive housing units reserved for people experiencing homelessness or chronic homelessness. A third of units in the development are designated for homeless veterans, including 18 units supported by the federal Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.

HCD provided over $4 million in funding from the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention program to support 20 of the project's homes, with another $8.7 million awarded from the Multifamily Housing Program to fund 14 special needs homes and six homes offering supportive services. Residents will enjoy laundry facilities and a picnic area complete with tot lot and playground.

Mercy Housing, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), developed and will continue managing this project, providing long-term supportive services for all residents. The VA will work directly with residents of the 18 VASH units, providing case management services.
