Cape Fear Valley Health Names Tammy Thurman Corporate Director of Community Affairs

Cape Fear Valley Health has named Tammy Thurman its new corporate director of community affairs, bringing more than 23 years of experience in community relations, government affairs and building partnerships across eastern North Carolina.

For Thurman, the new role is also a homecoming. Born at Betsy Johnson Hospital and raised in Dunn, she graduated from Midway High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in communication and media studies from Saint Augustine's University. Her ties to the region give her a personal connection to the communities Cape Fear Valley Health serves.

"Serving this region holds special meaning for me," Thurman said. "I bring a deep commitment to the people who call these communities home. My career has taught me that strong relationships begin with listening, building trust and consistently showing up."

In her new role, Thurman will lead efforts to strengthen relationships between the health system and local communities. She will work alongside employees, residents, nonprofit organizations, government officials and community leaders to build on existing partnerships, create new connections and better understand local needs. Her efforts will also focus on expanding opportunities for collaboration and supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference in the lives of those Cape Fear Valley Health serves.

"Tammy knows that caring for a community extends beyond our hospital walls," said Daniel Weatherly, CEO of Cape Fear Valley Health. "Her experience, relationship-building skills and dedication to service will help us strengthen partnerships and better understand the needs of those we serve."

Thurman previously served as senior manager of community and local government relations for Piedmont Natural Gas, where she managed community relations, government affairs and philanthropic initiatives throughout eastern North Carolina.

Her responsibilities at Cape Fear Valley Health will also include coordinating community outreach programs and events, gathering feedback from residents and serving as a spokesperson for the health system, helping communicate important health information to the public and media.

Thurman's commitment to community service extends to her involvement with organizations including United Way of Cumberland County and the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Council.

"What is important to the community is important to me," Thurman said. "I am grateful to bring my experience and passion for service to this role and help build stronger, healthier and more connected communities."
