MBTA Successfully Completes Latest Work on Green Line B, C, and D Branches

As a result of unencumbered access to the track area, crews continued work to install GLTPS along the B branch and perform catenary protection trough replacements on the B, C, and D branches.

The MBTA today announced the successful completion of its latest infrastructure improvements along the Green Line B branch, including the continued installation of Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) infrastructure, the replacement of the 130-year-old wooden overhead catenary wire "trough" near the Green Line portal, and necessary revitalization work to maintain the system. This work took place during nine consecutive days of shuttle bus service replacement between Kenmore and Boston College as well as during the weekend of April 25 - 26 when service was replaced with shuttle buses between Copley and Boston College on the B branch, St. Mary's on the C branch, and Brookline Hills on the D branch.

"GLTPS will add an extra layer of safety across the Green Line. We're committed to accomplishing this with level of urgency that our public and workforce deserves," said Interim Transportation Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng. "I'm proud that the MBTA team maximized this service outage to accomplish so much other critical work that will better the public, demonstrating our continued efforts to complete improvements more timely and efficiently. Thank you to our riders for their patience while this important work was completed."

With unencumbered access to Green Line track areas, this service change allowed crews to continue work to install GLTPS infrastructure along the street level tracks of the B branch between Kenmore and Boston College as well as within the Lake Street Yard facility, which included the installation of power cable, messenger cable, and GLTPS anchors. When complete, GLTPS will combine vehicle and wayside equipment to avoid train-on-train collisions, incorporate speed enforcement, and more, ultimately providing a safer trip for Green Line riders and a safer environment for trolley operators.

The MBTA also continued to replace the 130-year-old wooden overhead catenary wire "trough" within the Green Line tunnel, which is original to the tunnel's construction in the late 1890s. This work was also performed within the Green Line's core tunnel areas in November and December 2025 with work this month taking place near the portal areas of the B, C, and D branches during the weekend of April 25 - 26. The trough houses the Green Line's overhead catenary wire and was replaced with a modern, more durable, fiberglass protection trough, which provides a safer, more reliable experience for even more generations of riders.

A variety of other work also took place along the Green Line to further enhance the rider experience:

  • Work was accomplished near Blandford Street to prepare for the arrival of the upcoming new fleet of longer Type 10 Green Line vehicles.
  • Through close internal coordination, the MBTA's Maintenance of Way team and contractor crews performed a number of switch repairs, tunnel inspections, and more along the Green Line.
  • Communications software upgrades took place at Babcock Street and Amory Street.
  • Crews performed station cleaning, power washing, and maintenance at stations throughout the suspension area.
  • Upgrades to grade crossings were completed at South Street, Boston College, and the Lake Street Yard.
  • Light replacements took place within the tunnel near Kenmore.
