Miller Road Bridge over I-20 Now Open
|
|
|
Construction of the new Miller Road bridge over I-20 is complete. The Miller Road bridge over I-20 was closed and detoured for seven months starting in January 2025, and was recently opened weeks ahead of schedule, restoring the previous traffic pattern to the area.
The new bridge includes 4-foot bike lanes and 6.5-foot sidewalks on either side to provide additional methods of transportation. Additionally, the new bridge allows for a wider I-20 underneath to accommodate new auxiliary lanes along I-20.
Now reopened, this bridge will enhance the opportunity for connectivity via various travel modes and support the growing transportation demands in DeKalb County.

Crews on the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project are wrapping up the new Wesley Chapel Road on-ramp to I-20 westbound, which is anticipated to open in the coming weeks. Motorists should expect a minor traffic shift onto the new structure, with limited changes for their travel experience.
Next quarter, the new Fairington Road bridge over I-20 is set to open to traffic. The new bridge will realign the roadway with DeKalb Medical Parkway, putting an emphasis on improved efficiency. The new Fairington Road alignment will allow Fairington Road/DeKalb Medical Parkway to cross Hillandale Drive at a single, signalized intersection.
Also coming up next quarter, traffic will shift to a new alignment on the I-20 bridge over Snapfinger Creek, as we move closer to the bridge's construction wrapping up in 2026. This third traffic shift will allow the final phase of the construction in the median to be completed before putting I-20 mainline traffic into its final configuration. Once completed, the bridge will be wider to accommodate a new auxiliary lane.

As our crews continue to progress toward completion, we receive questions regarding key milestones and work surrounding the project. Check out some of our responses below and remember to follow Georgia DOT on social media for ongoing updates.
What will the new Wesley Chapel on-ramp to I-20 westbound look like? And what is the purpose of the new design?
-
The new Wesley Chapel Road on-ramp will eventually intertwine with a connecting lane, also known as a collector-distributor (CD) lane, from I-20 WB to I-285. Motorists will be able to merge right to the connecting lane or left onto I-20 WB.
-
Anticipated later this month, traffic on the existing on-ramp will shift slightly right into new lanes to allow construction to continue on the future westbound CD lane configuration.
What are the benefits of connecting or CD lanes? And what is the difference between auxiliary and connecting lanes?
-
Connecting lanes provide a barrier-separated transition between one roadway and another, carrying motorists through the interchange uninterrupted. Connecting lanes offer a smoother transition by removing additional traffic, reducing weaving, and streamlining movement for a more efficient drive.
-
Auxiliary lanes are additional lanes which allow motorists to change speeds safely as they enter or exit the roadway, while connecting lanes provide transition points from one highway to another.
Are new road and ramp configurations up to date on navigation services?
-
As new traffic patterns are introduced, Georgia DOT coordinates with major navigational services, including Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps. Notification is also sent to Georgia DOT's Transportation Management Center, which updates some of the dynamic message signs in the area, as well as 511 Georgia.
-
Potential delays in updates may occur due to internal processes at these navigational services.
