City of West Hollywood will Engage Community in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with a School Beautification Volunteer Event

The City of West Hollywood will continue its tradition of joining hundreds of communities across the country in a National Day of Service to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday through volunteerism to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve communities throughout the nation.

On Saturday, January 31, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the City of West Hollywood encourages community members to participate in the West Hollywood Elementary Beautification Day event, located at 970 N. Hammond Street. West Hollywood residents, visitors, and community members are invited to join the City, West Hollywood Elementary, and Friends of West Hollywood Elementary (FOWHE) to take part in this Day of Service. Volunteers will perform various landscaping, clean-up, and other beautifying tasks at the school. The Day of Service will kick off with a short commemorative program featuring members of the West Hollywood City Council and West Hollywood City Poet Laureate Jen Cheng.

Volunteers are required to register in advance and must be 13 years of age or older to participate. Details are available on the City of West Hollywood's Community Engagement and Volunteer Opportunities website page at https://www.weho.org/volunteer where there is a link to register via the volunteer portal. All registered volunteers will receive confirmation and check-in details.

The City is, additionally, encouraging the community to participate in ongoing local volunteer opportunities with City of West Hollywood-funded social services partner agencies. Volunteering with the City's partner agencies is a meaningful way to give back, strengthen community connections, and support important work happening in the City. Even small efforts go a long way in making a real difference. To learn more about all available services offered to West Hollywood community members, view the City of West Hollywood Funded Social Services Agencies & Programs brochure. Register to volunteer at go.weho.org/weho-volunteer.

Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January to honor the life and legacy of the civil rights leader, a day designated by Congress as a National Day of Service in 1994 to encourage community volunteering. January 19, 2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first national observance of MLK Day. California Volunteers has information about other MLK Day of Service volunteer opportunities online.
