Chinese Embassy in Tonga Holds Public Open Day Event Marking the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations and Dragon Boat Festival

On June 19, the Chinese Embassy hosted Public Open Day event marking the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations and the Dragon Boat Festival. Representatives from Tonga's sports sector, teachers and students, local media, as well as overseas Chinese gathered at the embassy to experience Dragon Boat culture and renew the friendship between China and Tonga. Ambassador Liu Weimin attended the event and delivered remarks.

Referring to the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, Ambassador Liu elaborated on the core vision of the Global Civilization Initiative. Citing dragon boats and Tongan traditional outrigger canoes, zongzi and Tongan indigenous delicacies as examples, he recounted the profound cultural resonance shared by the two countries. He also stated that Chinese Embassy will keep organizing various cultural events to build new bridges for dialogue between Chinese and Tongan civilizations, deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

During the event, a video address delivered by Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the 2026 global thematic activities for the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, as well as a publicity film on Dragon Boat Festival culture, were screened. Guests got hands-on experience of wrapping Zongzi, while athletes from the Tonga Netball put on a splendid Latin dance performance, leaving all attendees with wonderful memories of immersive traditional cultural experience.
