Association Announces Leadership Transition as CEO Bratsakis Accepts New Position

After more than 15 years as president and CEO of The MD|DC Credit Union Association, John Bratsakis has accepted a new position as Chief Executive Officer of The League of Credit Unions and Affiliates. Bratsakis will continue to lead the Association through July 31 before assuming his new role.

Bratsakis has served as President and CEO of the Association since 2011. During his tenure, he helped guide Maryland, DC and Delaware credit unions through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple federal government shutdowns, and evolving legislative and regulatory environments. Under his leadership, the Association strengthened its reputation as a highly engaged, relationship-driven organization focused on advocacy, education, and collaboration.

Bratsakis is dedicated to giving back to the credit union movement that he has served for over 35 years, including serving as Board Chair of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues, Credit Union Miracle Day and the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run. He also serves on the boards of CU4Kids, CSS, CU Risk Intelligence, League InfoSight, and Plexcity, a back-office company for associations that he helped establish.

Bratsakis was inducted into the African-American Credit Union Coalition's Hall of Fame in 2024 and earned the Credit Union Development Educator designation in 2020.

"This is an exciting opportunity for John, and we are grateful for his leadership, dedication, and role in creating a culture of success," said Kristin Shultz, President and CEO of Spectra Credit Union and Chair of the Association's Board of Directors. "As we move through this leadership transition, the Board is committed to a thoughtful and intentional process for determining the path forward, with the interests of our member credit unions front and center."

The Board of Directors will remain focused on continuity, stability, and the Association's ongoing mission of serving, supporting, and advocating for member credit unions as it carefully evaluates next steps.

"Serving this Association and the credit unions of Maryland, DC and Delaware has been one of the greatest honors and privileges of my career," said Bratsakis. "But I've never seen this as my work - it's our work. The relationships, the engagement, and the culture of people helping people belong to our Board, our staff, and our members. I'm grateful I get to continue serving alongside them through this transition, and I want our credit unions to know that the team they trust remains right here for them."

The Association and Board will keep members informed as the transition process moves forward.
