New Report: Maine “GOP Candidates for Governor Promise Abortion Restrictions”

New Report: Maine "GOP Candidates for Governor Promise Abortion Restrictions"

Maine's Republican gubernatorial candidates agree on one thing: taking away women's reproductive rights.

At a debate last week, a gathering of Maine's Republican gubernatorial candidates all voiced their support for plans to rip away reproductive care from women across the state and push an abortion ban that is out-of-step with the majority of Mainers. According to the Maine Beacon, "the [Republican] candidates endorsed increased restrictions on reproductive health care in Maine," making it clear that they would rip away a woman's freedom to choose if elected.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bobby Charles, who wasn't at the debate, also has an extreme anti-choice record that's wrong for Maine. Charles has ties to the Federalist Society, a group that was instrumental in a decades-long push to overturn Roe. Like Charles, potential GOP gubernatorial candidate and State Representative Laurel Libby supports extreme plans to ban abortion in Maine. Libby led a local anti-abortion group and called a law that expands access to abortion "extreme" and "evil."

"Maine's GOP candidates for governor have made it crystal clear: they will go after reproductive freedom on day one," said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. "By pushing toxic plans to ban abortion and take away women's fundamental rights, the Republican field continues to prove how they are in a race to be the most extreme and out-of-touch with Mainers."
