At 71, Vietnam Veteran Completes Washington County Felony Drug Treatment Court Program

All of us at the Washington County Sheriff's Office would like to take a moment to recognize the hard work and success of those who recently graduated from the Washington County Felony Drug Treatment Court. The program, known for its intensity and structure, requires participants to fully commit to rebuilding their lives through accountability, treatment, and community service.

"Rise From the Ashes," reflects that journey. Participants face a demanding schedule of treatment sessions, court appearances, meetings, and personal reflection. It's not an easy path, but for those who finish, the rewards are life-changing.

One of this year's five graduates, John Ballard, 71, has shown what determination can accomplish. A Vietnam Veteran who has faced significant personal loss, Ballard entered the program after a relapse that led to a felony DWI. With the support of family and the Drug Court team, he has maintained nearly two years of sobriety and become a role model for others in recovery.

Mr. Ballard invited Investigator Kate Paddock to his graduation after she worked with him on an unrelated case in which he was a victim. The two stayed in touch throughout his recovery, and she was among those present to see him complete the program at the Washington County Courthouse on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Mr. Ballard's granddaughters, proudly stood with him at graduation and after supporting him every step of the way.

Now that he has graduated, Mr. Ballard plans to return to the Washington County Jail to assist with Alcoholics Anonymous meetings hoping to encourage others to take the same steps he did.

From all of us at the Sheriff's Office, we would like to congratulate Mr. Ballard and all recent graduates for their commitment to recovery, accountability, and personal growth.
