Rep. Hoyle Votes 'No' on More Unchecked Military Spending

Since coming to Congress, Hoyle has consistently voted against additional military spending, citing a lack of oversight and accountability at the Pentagon

For Immediate Release: September 12, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. - This week, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) voted against unchecked military spending by voting 'No' on House Republicans' partisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Following the vote, Rep. Hoyle released the following statement:

"As I have said before: I support funding that keeps Americans safe and ensures our troops are fairly paid for their sacrifices. I also support many parts of this bill. However, it is irresponsible to give nearly $1 trillion dollars to an agency that has never passed a full audit and continues to misuse taxpayer dollars.

"In Oregon, we're told there isn't enough money for wildfire prevention or affordable housing. Yet in 2025, the Pentagon received over $1 trillion - half of which goes to private contractors in the military industrial complex. Without real oversight, this funding package represents a massive wealth transfer from hardworking taxpayers to defense industry executives.

"This year's vote also came as the Trump administration used funds appropriated for our defense to militarize American cities. Until they can guarantee this money will never again be used to against our communities, I cannot support additional funding to the Pentagon.

"The solution to every problem cannot be writing a bigger check. What we need is robust oversight, accountability and transparency."

Representative Hoyle had offered and supported amendments to improve the bill, which were ultimately rejected by House Republicans, including to:

  • Boost funding for VA State Home Construction Grant Program to make it easier to expedite the building of a new veteran's home in Roseburg;

  • Increase compensation for federal wildland fire fighters;

  • Ensure women-owned small businesses are given equal access to federal contracting opportunities through the Department of Veterans Affairs;

  • Require the Pentagon to study the prevalence of Parkinson's disease among civilian and military firefighters;

  • End U.S. military involvement in the war in Yemen; and,

  • Codify heath benefits for servicemembers who were stationed at the Karshi-Khanabad (K2) Air Base in Uzbekistan.
