Governor Gianforte Celebrates Workforce Training and Apprenticeships in Bozeman

Highlights efforts to expand registered apprenticeships and work-based learning for high school students

BOZEMAN, Mont. - Governor Greg Gianforte today joined Johnson Metal Works in Bozeman to celebrate expanding apprenticeship opportunities that prepare Montana students for high-demand, good-paying careers.

"Apprenticeships open doors for Montanans to learn valuable skills, earn while they learn, and step directly into rewarding careers," Gov. Gianforte said. "Thanks to the help of employers like Johnson Metal Works, we are connecting students with real-world experience that strengthens our workforce and allows the next generation to explore potential careers."

During the visit, the governor toured Johnson Metal Works and met with nearly 50 high school students from Gallatin High School and Bozeman High School who had the opportunity to learning welding and fabrication skills. Johnson Metal Works operates Montana's only tube laser and provides precision cutting, forming, fabricating, installations, and custom design services for its clients. The company offers internship and apprenticeship opportunities for Montana students interested in pursuing careers in welding and manufacturing.

"We are proud to give students the chance to learn hands-on skills and see what a career in welding and fabrication really looks like," said Scott Johnson, owner of Johnson Metal Works. "Apprenticeships help us grow our business while investing in the next generation of Montana workers."

Since taking office, Gov. Gianforte has prioritized strengthening Montana's workforce by expanding access to apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities. In August, the governor launched the 406 JOBS initiative to unify the state's workforce system and better connect Montanans with in-demand careers.

A key focus of 406 JOBS is increasing registered apprenticeship pathways and establishing local sector partnerships in high-demand industries, priorities outlined in the initiative's recently approved Year One Work Plan.

"Through the Montanans at Work tour, we heard directly from employers and students across the state about the need for more apprenticeship and credentialing opportunities," said Sarah Swanson, Commissioner of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. "406 JOBS is putting those voices into action by cutting red tape, expanding registered apprenticeships, and creating clearer pathways from the classroom to the workforce."

Students participating in the visit shared how hands-on learning opportunities are helping them explore career paths and gain confidence before graduation.

"This opportunity opens up a lot of doors for me and a lot of other kids who are looking to understand more about industrial fields," said Peyton B., a junior at Gallatin High School. "Johnson Metal Works opening up their doors to so many kids is just so eye-opening and gives kids another option, especially for me wanting to be a high school welding teacher. It helps broaden my understanding of what's actually in the trades and what industrial experience looks like."

The governor emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between schools, employers, and the state to ensure Montana students have access to meaningful career opportunities.

"When we invest in apprenticeships, we invest in our students, our businesses, and our communities," Gov. Gianforte said. "Together, we are building a workforce that will power Montana's future for generations to come."
