Low-income seniors over 60 are encouraged to apply for a free $50 benefit card redeemable with certified farmers or farmer's markets and farm stands in Alabama.
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) issues the cards. The SFMNP is a federally funded program administered by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Farmers Market Authority Section. The program provides eligible seniors with a $50 benefit card for purchases from certified vendors. The program has limited funding, and food benefits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Seniors are encouraged to complete the online application as soon as possible.
"This is a great program for Alabama seniors to purchase more local fruits and vegetables," said Alabama Department of Senior Services Commissioner Jean Brown. "I encourage those who are eligible to apply."
Applicants must apply online at https://agi.alabama.gov/farmersmarket/. Applications cannot be taken over the phone or by mail.
The card can be used to purchase fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs from farmers who grow them and sell directly to consumers at markets and farm stands from May 1 through Nov. 27, 2026.

Participants present the benefit card at the time of purchase, which is scanned like a debit or credit card. Participants must reapply annually.
