Des Moines, IA - Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) warns that advancements in AI and technology have made scammers increasingly dangerous, worsening the impact of Medicare fraud on older adults. Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, and scammers are actively targeting Medicare beneficiaries with fake plan offers, phishing texts, and impostor calls.
According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, an estimated $60 BILLION is lost nationally each year to Medicare fraud. SHIIP-SMP Director, Kristin Griffith, shares, "Medicare fraud is not just a financial crime against the government - it directly harms Iowans," said SHIIP-SMP Director, Kristin Griffith. "When a scammer steals your Medicare number, they can submit fraudulent Medicare claims, leaving you unable to get legitimate care when you need it most."
Medicare fraud can be difficult to spot, especially when scammers can fake familiar phone numbers and create believable medical bills.
If you or someone you know suspects their Medicare number has been compromised or notices unfamiliar charges on a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB), report it immediately:
Iowa SMP counselors provide free, confidential assistance to help beneficiaries resolve fraudulent claims, protect their coverage, and restore their Medicare records.
