State Historical Marker Issued to KULP Radio El Campo

posted on 7.07.2026

The Texas Historical Commission has issued a state historical marker to KULP Radio recognizing its broadcasts of farm news, Czech polka music, and regional events to the citizens of El Campo since KULP-AM signed on in 1948. KULP general manager Stephen Zetsche reports the marker was installed in late June in front of KULP Radio's studio and offices recently.

While there are more than 16,000 state historical markers across the state, there are only a handful that have been issued that recognize a specific Texas radio station. Perhaps the best known is the marker for WRR Radio Dallas (2002), which recognizes WRR-AM as the state's first federally licensed radio station. Other state historical markers commemorate important broadcasting events in Texas. The marker at Texas A&M University's Kyle Field (2005), for example, details the nation's first play-by-play radio broadcast of a college football game in 1921 by the university's amateur campus wireless station 5XB. The Texas Historical Commission's historic sites atlas of markers may be viewed here.
