Klobuchar, Smith Secure Federal Funding for Wild Rice Watershed District in Senate-Passed Legislation

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that Congress approved $50,000 in funding to restore a natural corridor along the Lower Reach of the Wild Rice River. The legislation now goes to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"The federal funding we secured will help restore another section of the Wild Rice River - mitigating flooding issues, improving water quality, and restoring fish and wildlife habitat," said Klobuchar.

"Protecting its waters and surrounding ecosystems is critical for the health of our communities and the livelihoods of those who depend on it," said Smith. "With the support of my colleagues, the funding secured for the Lower Wild Rice Corridor Habitat Restoration Program will be vital in supporting important projects that reduce pollution, restore habitats, and enhance water quality.

Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called "Congressionally Directed Spending" (CDS). During the CDS process, Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across Minnesota. That process includes a careful vetting to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure projects are cost-effective, reliable, and well-planned.

Projects are expected to receive funding over the next several months.
