By Andrea O'Neill '06Tabitha Delmont '23 first experienced the Career Intensive Boot Camp as a student. Recently, however, she returned as an alumni volunteer to support the resource that she found so helpful as a student.
"I remember the value, utility, and applicability of the help I received from the career bootcamp and the professionals who took the time to volunteer," said Delmont. "I was able to gain direct insight into careers I was interested in and grow a professional network before I started my own career."
Delmont says that between her academics and career development, she felt prepared after graduation. Not only did she have the accounting skills necessary to do the job, but she also carried a sense of self-awareness and adaptability. Those transferrable skills, Delmont says, have made her a reliable team player with the ability to take on new opportunities as an accounting supervisor with Enterprise Mobility.
"The most important thing you can do in any career is be open," said Delmont. "My professors invested in my future success, helped to push me out of my comfort zone, and challenged me. I learned problem solving skills, flexibility, and self-reliance; all of which have greatly contributed to my current success."
Delmont's experience as a resume reviewer was most memorable as a volunteer since she was paired with a student who was also working toward a career in Accounting, and has since followed up with that student with additional resources. Making such a direct impact on a current student was something that Delmont found to have impacted her as well.
"Offering mentorship impacts the mentor as much as it does the mentee, and I am happy to be in a position to help progress someone else's future," said Delmont.
Delmont was not only impacted by the student with whom she was paired. In fact, she said that all the students she met that weekend were excited and dedicated throughout the event and came well prepared with thoughtful questions. She says that volunteering has allowed her to give back, grow her network, and recruit talent.
"If you have the time, it's worth the time. "The eagerness of the students I spoke to stuck out to me at their preparedness for their future after school. Giving students time to develop now and create relationships is beneficial to their future and could potentially open the door to people looking to hire."
